Go top-down. Not data swamp bottom-up.

There are always more facets and numbers than you can handle. What is a set of plausible causes and consequences? What sounds like a reasonable idea? Which factors appear important but effects unknown? Talk to senior people, get some views, build some hypotheses and test. Focus on those, hard.
